Modus Ponens

Disciplines Argument > Syllogisms > Modus Ponens

Description | Example | Discussion | See also

Description

If X is true then Y is true.

X is true.

Therefore Y is true.

Example

If you repent, you will go to heaven. You have repented. So you will go to heaven.

If you buy today, I will give you a 10% discount. You have agreed to buy today, so I will reduce the price by 10%.

Discussion

Modus Ponens is a fancy name for a simple thing, although it is at the root of most Syllogisms and many other conditional arguments and offers.

If you want another fancy name: this is Affirming the Antecedent, where X is the antecedent which is affirmed as true.
