Description

When metaphor is used in adverbs, additional meaning is placed upon the verbs being supported.

The adverb may well contain the metaphor to the standard verb being used. The verb may also contain the main metaphor, in which case the adverb acts in support or jarring contrast.

Example

He ran musically, beating out the rhythm.

He floated musically, rocking rhythmically to the beat.

With demonic dancing, they flamingly excited the whole room.

Discussion

In the same way that adjectives enhance nouns, so also do adverbs enhance verbs. Adverb metaphors likewise have a similarity with Adjective metaphors, adding strength to their target, perhaps making the metaphor more obvious and perhaps adding depth.

Adverbs can be used to convert a simile or analogy into a metaphor. Thus 'he was tenacious, like a dog' becomes 'he was doggedly tenaciously'.
