Illogic

Techniques > Resisting persuasion >  Illogic

Method | Example | Discussion | See also

Method

Use arguments that are not logical, but state them with conviction and force. Then watch the other person trying to show you that you are not being logical (or maybe getting down dirty and illogical with you too!).

You can use elaborate logic, one of the many classic fallacies or simply talk plain nonsense!

As they try to persuade you, lead them on a merry dance of strange, lateral and baffling conclusions.

Example

I want to buy today, but tomorrow will be another day.

If I do as you say, I won't be able to choose.

It wouldn't be logical to make sense when it's all nonsense.

Discussion

We all have needs for logic and rationality, so when you are not rational it will confuse the other person as they become unable to explain to themselves what you mean and thus give you the advantage.

When they try to make sense of what you are saying, they may well conclude that you are rather stupid and hence use simpler arguments, which of course you can also counter.
