Say no

Techniques > Resisting persuasion >  Say no

Method | Example | Discussion | See also

Method

Just say no. When they ask you to do something you do not want to do, decline.

You can add an apology if you wish, but beware of them taking this as a sign that you may yet be persuaded. An explanation may help.

Often, especially when the other person is trying hard to persuade you, the best approach is a firm and polite refusal. You do not need to apologize. You do not need to explain. You can just say no.

Example

Sorry, I must decline your very kind offer. I am expected home by 6pm.

No. I do not want to do that.

No!! Can you hear me? The answer is 'no'. 'No' now and 'no' tomorrow.

Discussion

It is amazing how many people find it difficult to say no. Brought up to have manners and to obey parents and leaders, many find it highly uncomfortable declining requests from anyone.

And yet ‘No’, is one of the first words many children learn. They also learn to 'just say no' to strangers and to peers who offer them narcotics and worse.

If you find it difficult to say no, you may need to practice refusal. Start on something easy and work up to those situations where you find it difficult.
