Tears

Method

If all else fails, burst into tears. Be very, very upset. When they try to console them, turn away, but only a bit, thus encouraging them to keep on trying to calm you down.

Break off and break down in the middle of a sentence or explode after they have said something upsetting.

Just well up and sob silently or make a very audible scene.

If you can't turn on the tears, then turn away and just appear as upset as you can.

Example

Oh, this is so terrible....

How can you say that...

Discussion

Tears are, in many societies, more acceptable for a woman, where it is seen as natural vulnerability. For men, it may be seen as weakness and lead to derision and scorn. Tears often work well for women, as it triggers the relationship needs in other women and protectiveness in men.

Tears can also be a less than successful method for women too, particularly where they are working in a male-based environment where the rules for everyone are masculine in nature.

Tears are not easy to turn on, although some people find it easier than others.
